200 Miles- Alfred’s Challenge

Date: 4th Sep 2022 Author: Lindsay Hague-Morgan

Over the summer, one of our Cubs decided to do an amazing achievement, they challenged themselves to ride 200 miles to fundraise for Market Bosworth Scout Group.

I was contacted by Alfred’s dad in August to hear that Alfred had set himself a challenge. After experiencing fundraising for the Scout hut refurbishment with the Cubs Scouts earlier in the year Alfred decided over the summer, he wanted to do a challenge of his own. So, Alfred decided: I am cycling 200 miles during the month of August for 1st Market Bosworth Scout Group because I want to raise money for new camping kit.

These are some of the updates I received in August:

  • After 14 days Alfred is 110 miles into his ‘200 miles in august’ bike challenge. Despite the heat he has managed to do 70 miles in the last 7 days. Most of the miles have been on the local roads, but he has had one big trip from Ashby to Staunton Harold and a 20-mile day going up and down the Tissington trail.
  • We have only suffered one puncture and one falling off!
  • The bike ride was powered by breads sticks provided by a friend who joined for lots of miles.
  • He always had lots of people wanting to ride with him.
  • I lost count of the number of ice creams.
  • Rutland water was the longest day 23 miles.
  • The bikes even had to come camping with us.

The updates made me reflect over August, how flexible Scouting is to encourage young people’s different interests and ambitions, not everyone is cycling 200 miles in a month and on top of that fundraising! I started looking for some information to share about Scouting and I needed to look no further than the messaging that greets you on the national scout website: scouts.org.uk, “Preparing young people with skills for life, We’re Scouts and everyone is welcome here.”

On Monday 29th August Alfred completed the 200 miles challenge and we would like to thank Alfred’s family and friends for joining him on those many miles. He had set a fundraising target of raising two hundred pounds for his challenge and he has absolutely smashed it by raising four hundred and fifty pounds.

From everyone at 1st Market Bosworth Scout Group, Thank you Alfred for setting yourself this challenge, we couldn’t be prouder of you.
