Additional info on OSM and Moving Up to the next Scouting Section
I have added some questions onto OSM to help with smooth operation of Camps and Photographs:
Within “Personal Details” you will find a section relating to Additional Information:
These questions will allow a camp medic on camp to provide certain medication to your young person. Please could I ask for you to complete this information.
I have also updated our consents area, please could you complete these questions:
Moving up
As we have grown bigger in the last year (2021 / 2022) we have found that moving onto the next section has becoming a bit harder to manage for us. This is causing delays in new starters joining and confusion when parents / carers and leaders do not know when the young person should move up or has moved up.
We have (well done Ian) come up with a plan to help us all in this area:
On OSM Personal Details: there will be a date entered into a section within Additional Information: It may give a Month (if estimated) or exact dates if we are sure on when it will happen.
Estimated:
Exact Dates:
Flexibility
When we provide a date, we aim to move the young people at the end of term closest to their birthday. Our date does not take into account: Friends Circles, Year groups at school, maturity, other clubs and commitments. However, you will be pleased to hear that you can influence us by letting us know if we need to speed up or delay a young person moving. We have the ability to be flexibility and can speed up or delay someone moving up by six months and on the very rare occasion longer for medical reasons. This is the flexibility we have:
- Beaver Scouts: Joining age 5 ¾ – Leaving age 8 (Flexibility 7 ½ – 8 ½)
- Cub Scouts: Joining age 8 – Leaving age 10 ½ (Flexibility 10 – 11)
- Scout: Joining age 10 ½ Leaving age 14 (Flexibility 13 ½ – 14 ½)
If you need to take advantage of this flexibility please contact your leader or email gsl_mbscouts@outlook.com
Three Sessions
When your young person moves up we would ideally like your young person to attend three sessions of the new section whilst continuing with your current section. For example: a Beaver Scout joining Cub Scouts would attend both Cub Scouts and Beaver Scouts for the duration of the three sessions.
This allows the young person to adjust and also makes it less scary for the next ones to move up as they will talk about this experience.
So when will they move up? – On this example they would no longer attend Beavers from the 9th September and OSM will be updated to remove them from their old section.
The young person does not have to attend both sections for this transition they can simple join the new section. i.e. if they do not wish to continue with Beaver Scouts they simply move to Cubs Scouts. If you email gsl_mbscouts@outlook.com to say that they have moved on I will remove your young person from the old section reducing the amount of emails you get.
Fingers crossed this plan works and please be patient with us.
