Cubs (Friday Section)

Welcome to 1st Market Bosworth Cubs (Friday nights) Section

We meet on Friday nights during school term-time at our Scout Hut in Market Bosworth. (At the moment our Scout Hut is being renovated so we are meeting at different locations).

Cub Scouts are between the ages of 8 to 10 1/2 years old. Many of our current Cub Scouts have ‘swum-up’  from our Beaver colony, but we also have many Cubs who join us new to Scouting, it’s never too late to join and start your Scouting adventure.

What do Cubs get up to?

The Cubs Leadership team work to a 2 1/2 year plan which enables the Cubs to achieve the challenge badges required for their Silver Scout Award. This is the highest award in the Cubs section and many of our Cubs transfer up to our Scout section proudly wearing their Silver Scout award badge on their uniform.

Cubs is about having lots of fun; trying lots of new things and developing skills you probably wouldn’t learn anywhere else. It’s about learning responsibility; having fun safely; stepping out of your ‘comfort-zone’ and respecting your surroundings. During a normal (non-Coronavirus!) year, Cubs would be attending overnight and weekend camps, sleeping under canvas and learning how to cook outdoors. To prepare for camps, we run many activities such as pitching tents and backwoods cooking (always a massive hit with the Cubs!) And we try lots of adventurous activities such as archery and air rifle shooting – all under the watchful eye of our qualified Leaders. We always teach our Cubs the knowledge and respect for the equipment they are using and the safety of others around them.

But it’s not all about camping; we also work towards lots of varied activity badges, this term we have been working on our Fitness, World Faith, Entertainers and Chefs badges! There will always be a lot of sewing of badges to do, and Cubs can even achieve some of their badges at home.

At 1st Market Bosworth we are very passionate about Youth-Led Scouting – which means Leaders finding out what the Young People want to do, and making it happen. Our Cubs are always so engaged with our programme, especially when they help to shape it.

And of course there are always lots of games to play at each session – it’s not always about the badgework!

A bit about “Akela / Badger”!

Let’s start with the name “Badger” – I joined Market Bosworth Scout group as an Assistant Beaver Scout Leader and earned the name Badger. I now run the Cub Section and I am transitioning over to Akela. I joined Market Bosworth in 2017 and I am also a trustee of the scout group.
