Beavers

Start them Young! Welcome to 1st Market Bosworth Beavers Section

We meet on Wednesday nights during school term-time at our Scout Hut in Market Bosworth.

Beaver Scouts are our youngest members, between the ages of 6 to 8 years old. Our Beaver Colony meets each week to take part in a wide range of activities including games, crafts, looking at the world we live in, challenges and adventures – which all help them to achieve their badges and gain confidence. Our Beavers are encouraged to try new things and make new friends. Joining Beavers is just the beginning of their big Scouting adventure.

Beavers have the opportunity to take part in the fun and excitement of camps and sleepovers. It may be the first time they spend a night away from home so it’s a real adventure for them!

If your child would like to join us, or you’ve got an interest in helping us out then please get in touch – we’d love to hear from you!

Your Beaver Leadership Team:

What do Beavers get up to?

Our Beaver Colony meets each week in term-time for lots of fun, games and activities. Our Beaver Colony has 4 Lodges, called Jellyfish (yellow), Dolphin (blue), Coral (green) and Orca (red). The colour of our woggles on our Group neckers shows which Lodge the Beaver Scout is in.  Most of the activities, games and adventures are performed in their lodges. Beaver Scouts will also each have the opportunity of being a Lodge Leader; giving them extra responsibilities and helping others.

Our Beaver Leadership team has put together a comprehensive 2 year programme, which covers all the Challenge Awards and Staged and Activity badges the Beaver Scout needs to achieve to obtain the Bronze Scout Award. This is the highest badge awarded to a Beaver Scout and we are always very proud when our Beavers swim up to Cubs with their Bronze Scout award! You can find out more about Beaver Scouts and all our Awards here.

Being a Beaver Scout is about being the best you can be, trying new things and being kind and helpful. When your Beaver Scout is invested, they make a Promise to the Colony which is tailored to be inclusive, and receive their Membership badge and Group Necker:

I promise to do my best
To be kind and helpful
And to love God/Our World/Allah/My Dharma

A typical Beaver Session at 1st Market Bosworth would include:

  • A challenge or activity upon arrival while waiting for the session to start
  • Beavers called into their Lodges, Lodge checks (uniform, clean hands etc!) and then sit in a horseshoe
  • Flag Break, our welcome “BEAVERS” makaton and discussion of the evening’s activities
  • Badge activities as a group or in lodges
  • Fun games
  • Recap, lodge points awarded, flag break and goodnight song

How to Join

Lots of young people want to join Beavers and you might have to wait for a space to become available before your child can start their journey. If you have any questions about accessibility, it’s best to contact us in addition to your child’s application. By being upfront about additional needs from the start, parents/carers can work in partnership with local leaders to make sure your young person has the best experience possible.

On your child’s first night at Beavers, they’ll be taking part in lots of activities, and should just wear something they feel comfortable in (t-shirt, jogging bottoms, trainers etc)

Eventually, your child will need a Beaver uniform to wear to meetings and on trips and nights away. Wearing a uniform is comfy and practical. It means no-one feels uncomfortable or left out and helps everyone to feel a part of our Beaver Colony. It also gives them a place to show off all the Beaver badges they will earn (spoiler – there will be LOTS!!)

For Beavers, our uniform consists of a blue Beavers sweatshirt with badges sewn on and a coloured necker (scarf) which represents our Scout group.  Our necker at 1st Market Bosworth is red and white, and is presented to your Beaver Scout when invested. Our Beaver Scouts usually wear the Beaver Polo Shirt underneath their sweatshirt and navy blue trousers. Uniform can either be bought from the Leicestershire Scouts online shop (all the profits go back into Leicestershire Scouting!), or our national Scout Store,  or you may prefer to buy pre-loved from sites such as Vinted etc. If you’re not sure where to start, adult volunteers can give you more information about what to buy and where to buy it – please ask!
